Located within the historic Mount Juliet Estate in Kilkenny, the Windy Meadow project is part of a broader landscape masterplan aimed at enhancing the estate’s ecological and visitor experience. Since 2019, Studio Glasú has overseen landscape restoration and design across the estate, introducing sustainable management practices that blend heritage with biodiversity. Inspired by the flowing River Nore and the movement of wind through the landscape, Windy Meadow transforms a previously underutilised area into a dynamic, immersive environment that evolves with the seasons.

Transitioning from a traditionally manicured aesthetic to a wilder, ecologically rich landscape required a cultural shift among stakeholders and estate management. The design needed to integrate seamlessly with the estate’s historic fabric while enhancing views from the Manor House. Additionally, the landscape had to be resilient enough to accommodate fluctuating visitor numbers, particularly during large-scale events like the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, without compromising ecological integrity.

Windy Meadow replaces formal lawns with mounded meadows, native grasses, and wildflower plantings, reducing maintenance while enhancing biodiversity. Low-impact management practices allow the landscape to develop naturally, minimizing irrigation and chemical use. Materials such as golden dust hoggin paths and Kilkenny limestone setts ensure the design remains rooted in local heritage while supporting long-term sustainability.

The project redefines Mount Juliet’s landscape identity by balancing historical preservation with ecological innovation. The introduction of wildflower meadows, native woodlands, and habitat features supports biodiversity while reducing carbon emissions and resource use. By adopting a nature-led approach, the estate strengthens its resilience to climate change and enhances visitor engagement, creating a model for sustainable estate management. Through thoughtful design and conservation-led planning, Mount Juliet continues to evolve as a premier destination that honors both its past and future.
