This private suburban garden in Dublin was reimagined as a multifunctional outdoor room. Studio Glasú was commissioned to transform the garden into a contemporary yet timeless retreat, rooted in texture, detail, and seasonal planting.

The garden’s compact scale required every surface and detail to work hard, accommodating circulation, seating, storage, and planting without compromise. The challenge lay in layering these functions seamlessly while avoiding a cluttered or fragmented feel. Boundaries, paving, and planting all had to contribute equally to creating atmosphere, character, and privacy within the suburban context.

The design introduces a finely detailed hardscape of polished in-situ concrete with exposed recycled aggregate, paired with small-format clay pavers to form a rich textural patio — the heart of the entertaining space. Planting is allowed to spill into every crack and crevice, softening edges and enveloping the seating areas in greenery. A central lawn is framed by lush seasonal herbaceous borders, offering a calm focal point. Boundary walls are reimagined with Wicklow larch timber screens, designed to reveal a bespoke abstract mural that transforms once grey blockwork into a piece of garden art. A custom-built shed, clad in charred larch using the Japanese shou sugi ban technique, merges into a raised sleeper border planted with multistem Amelanchier and Prunus, creating both structure and seasonal interest. Discreet lighting extends the garden’s use into the evening, enhancing its role as a space for relaxation and social life throughout the year.

The result is a richly layered suburban garden that feels generous, welcoming, and deeply personal despite its modest footprint. Functional elements such as storage and boundaries have been elevated into design features, while planting and texture create a green sanctuary year-round.
