Howth Castle, a landmark of historical and architectural significance, has evolved over 900 years within the Howth Demesne, an Architectural Conservation Area. Studio Glasú has been commissioned to restore and redevelop the estate, preserving its rich heritage while enhancing it as a premier destination for leisure, culture, and food experiences. The project focuses on revitalizing the castle’s landscape, walled gardens, and woodlands while maintaining its unique coastal setting.

The primary challenge is balancing historical preservation with modern accessibility and visitor engagement. The castle grounds have become overgrown, obscuring original layouts and restricting movement. Interventions must complement the historic fabric while activating underutilized spaces and improving circulation for all visitors. Additionally, the project must accommodate increased foot traffic while maintaining ecological integrity and the estate’s cultural significance.

The design approach restores historic paths based on archival research, improving connectivity and enhancing the visitor journey. A new greenway will weave through the site, and the castle’s fabric will be carefully restored. A key intervention includes a pavilion in the stable yard, bringing year-round activity to the space. The landscape masterplan, guided by historical research and arborist collaboration, reinstates original layouts while ensuring ecological longevity. A new Museum Plaza will create a welcoming entry point and provide a multifunctional space for exhibitions and events.

The project will transform Howth Castle into a vibrant cultural landmark, seamlessly integrating history with contemporary functionality. Sensitive restoration and strategic interventions will improve visitor experience while safeguarding the estate’s heritage. The pavilion, Museum Plaza, and reinstated pathways will activate previously underutilized areas, fostering community engagement. By blending ambitious yet contextually appropriate design, Howth Castle will become a dynamic, historically resonant destination for generations to come.
